You have a business and you want to start advertising online, but do not know exactly how to start. Online advertising is a great way to create awareness of your product or service and increase business, but it can become expensive quickly if you are not keen. How do you start advertising your business online without losing money?

Earlier this month, I was speaking to a Marketing Manager of a certain company. They have never advertised their business online because they really didn’t know where to start; their offline campaigns were working perfectly getting leads every day. For them, advertising online was a waste of time and money.

How do we make sure that there is a Return of Investment (ROI) when advertising online? There are several simple things we can do to ensure that our online advertising campaigns are successful.

Understand the paid channel pricing models



There are 2 common online advertising options; CPM and CPC.

CPM Cost per thousand is used to show the price of 1,000 impressions on one web page. If the price is $2.00 CPM, this means that you will pay $2.00 for every 1,000 impressions. An impression is a measure of the number of times an ad is displayed or has left an impression on a user, whether it was clicked or not.

Cost per click (CPC), are Ads that you pay for only when someone actually clicks on them. This means you don’t pay unless they actually click on it whether they have seen it or not. These Ads are usually shown in text form, possibly with a smaller image.

Choose the Right Ad Network



Choosing an Ad network is difficult, and what works for one business, might not work for another. Here are 5 quick questions you should ask yourself:
What is your target?
Will the Ad network help you reach your target audience?
Is the Ad network user interactive?
Are the Ad Formats appealing to you?
Is the ad network transparent?

Create a Landing Page that converts



Selecting the right ad network is the first step to making any online advertising campaign light up; you need to create some high converting landing pages. You just don’t want people to visit your page; you want them to take some kind of action when they’re there. To do this, you need to create a landing page that’s engaging and compelling enough to convince them of what to do next spelled out clearly by a CTA.

Digital advertising is an extremely viable marketing channel, but it comes at a price (literally). Online advertising can be highly effective in driving traffic, but you should always remember to start small and test out what works for you. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. If you follow the steps above, you are sure to be successful.
